Speedy Sight Words! Say It. Map It. Spelling the Word Said with MyWordz®

Updated: Jul 2

Why would any words be 'tricky'? Say It. Map It. Spelling the Word Said with MyWordz® Word Mapping Mastery® Tool

How do children store words in the brain’s word bank (the orthographic lexicon)? By linking three essential parts: the speech sounds, the spelling (the letters that represent those speech sounds or phonemes), and the meaning. For too many children, especially those with dyslexia or speech and language differences, this connection is not obvious. But it can be.

With MyWordz®, children can now see the connections. This word mapping tool shows the structure of English words in both directions. It supports not only print to speech, but also speech to print. That is what makes it life changing for children who struggle to learn to read and spell with phonics.

Mapping the word 'said' from speech to print AND print to speech.

For dyslexic children who struggle to hear the sounds in words, and this can happen regardless of intelligence, phonics can be confusing. Phonemic awareness is not the same as general hearing. These children might hear a pin drop but still struggle to identify the sounds in the word d/r/o/p. MyWordz® makes this invisible code visible. We show the speech sounds using Phonemies® (Speech Sound Monsters) and the letters using Sound Pics® through MyWordz® word mapping technology, so children can make those vital links instantly. There is no need to wait to be taught the word. They see it. They understand it.

For non-speaking children, there is MySpeekie®, the world's first one-screen AAC designed for autistic children who cannot yet read or spell. It is INCLUDED in the MyWordz® tech, and allows them to type the speech sounds and see the corresponding word. It is a way to communicate and learn using just one screen.

If children are not yet able to write, whether due to age, fine motor delay, or dyspraxia, they can trace over the printed word. Just print it directly from the Map and Drag screen. Tracing is a helpful stepping stone.

But if they can write, even better. Saying the sounds while writing the matching letters, then blending the sounds into the full word, helps to secure the word in the orthographic lexicon. If possible, always encourage writing after saying and mapping.

Remember to download the words your child maps. This becomes their personal speech sound dictionary. It is a powerful, individual word mapping book they can revisit and build over time.
